  Joint Venture with Authonomy.com Authors ~ "416" ~ "Fright Four-Sixteen"

Picture

To borrow the phrase from TRM, our infamous "Dark Lord" of "The Alliance of Worldbuilders" thread, we are 'a bunch of Sci-Fi/Fantasy nerds'.

Yes, maybe we are, but we are all dedicated to our craft...writing the unimaginable. Along with other writers from the website, Authonomy.com, an idea was born. Thanks to "Splinker", the resident puppet dog (and inspiration), the thread specifically for Flash Fiction Friday (a weekly competition of stories 1,000 words or less) was dedicated to horror for the month of October in tribute to Halloween.

Hence, the fun began. The first week, October 7, 2011, the only stipulation was that each story must be in the horror genre. Slowly the entries accumulated. It was a good showing, but not exceptional. The stories were no less intriguing. The submissions ended and so did the voting.

For the next week, October 14, 2011, another stipulation was enforced. To coincide with an Authonomy.com contest, specifically 416 words, no more, no less, "Splinker" put us all to the challenge. All who had participated the week before were chomping at the bit, ready for it. The new FFF thread was put up a day early and the race began. The submissions flew in, one after another. 10, then 15, more made 28, and as the day went on the count continued to rise. By the submission deadline, we had produced 50+ FF horror stories, each exactly 416 worlds. The total was a feat all its own, but the 416 words made it a good test of our writing skills.

"Splinker" put out a suggestion to all who had participated, "Why don't we put these together, they're too good to lose in this thread forever, and put it on the site and see what happens?"

There was unanimous agreement for his idea, and he went to work formatting and uploading. Within hours of the deadline, the book was ready and appeared on the site. Knowing it would need a cover, I jumped into action, not even asking for 'permission'. I messaged "Splinker", told him the cover was ready, emailed it to him, he said, "Awesome!", uploaded it and it was ultimately approved.

The book itself went from "Not Yet Ranked" to Ranked 3020 in a little over a day, and within hours of uploading it became #1 Top Ranked Book. As of this moment, October 16, 2011, 11:42 p.m. Central Time, it sits on 41 Bookshelves, 10 Watchlists and has received 25 Comments. A huge WELL DONE, to all those who contributed, each and every story is a classic.
